Why is it life gets in the way of knitting…

Posted by – November 16, 2006

I have a whole bunch of excuses but I will endeavor to bore you more with my knitting misadventures in the future. I do have an FO, for you all to *cough* enjoy. So I guess I’ll deal with that and then the other knitting foo after.

knithulu 3.0

Pattern: Knithulu

Yarn: Lambs Pride Bulky in black

Needles size 10.5

Notes: I hate making these. Its my third and final one. Anyone else who wants one can learn to knit for all I care. Actually in all honesty of the three this one was the easiest. I think its because I finally didn’t use a craptastic yarn. So maybe there is another one in my future. Someone would have to beg and beg hard though.

Finished Finished Finished

Posted by – September 11, 2006

Yes it is finished. I finally finished a project where I was dying for the end product. I fell in love with the vintage velvet scarf in touch me when I saw it. That was reinforced when I saw a sample knit up at Threaded Bliss. So I rashly decided that I would knit it up price be damned, it would be mine. I actually ordered the yarn from yarn market last spring but who wants to knit something when it will be over a half a year before they can wear it. Anyway….

Pattern: Vintage Velvet

Yarn: Muench Touch Me in Maroon

Needles: Knit Picks Circs size 8

Notes: I didn’t modify anything however I did make it using 6 balls instead of five. I did make mistakes. Fortunately through the wonder of felting you can’t tell now. Most people found the scarf utterly amazing and the yarn really is incredible. I really enjoyed the pattern it kept me interested for most of it but it was also mindless enough to allow me to knit it front of the tv. If it didn’t cost a bloody fortune I would totally knit this again.

The sock and the hat

Posted by – July 26, 2006

The Sock

My first attempt at a toe up sock. I took a sock class and it could have been the needles (denise) or the yarn (takhi cotton classic) but I never really got the sock love. That is until now. So now I’m doing a generic toe up sock pattern (wendy’s) and loving it. Of course it could also be the lorna’s laces I’m using.

The Hat

Since I suck I have slacked on posting pics of that hat I made.  I do wish I had managed a more flattering picture but come on you are interested in the knitting not the state of my makeup. I really enjoyed the pattern. So without further ado I bring you Odessa.

Pattern: Odessa

Yarn: RYC Cashsoft DK color Poppy
Needle: Combination of denise and addi’s
Pattern Notes: Well it was going well until the top when I didn’t trust the pattern. So it has a few flaws but you can’t see them too much and there was no way I was going to frog it. I really enjoyed knitting this. It was fast, it kept my interest, the yarn was delicious. I’m going to make two more one for me and one for my cousin. I do plan on using beads on mine though.

Sophie Bag

Posted by – June 25, 2006

Pattern: Sophie

Yarn: Cascade 220 (exact shade unknown since the ball band was lost)

Needle: 10.5 Denise

Pattern Notes: Quick and easy pattern. A bit small perhaps but it has nice shaping and the twisted straps are a nice detail. Felted bags really are the best first project.

Well that was quick

I kind of like one day projects. I finished the sophie bag tonight. Ok technically it wasn’t one day but I felt too awful with the girl plague last night to do anything with it so I’m saying it was about a day and a half tops. Even so I am convinced it was indeed about a days worth of knitting. It’s in the wash felting as we speak. I guess today will be a day of zen like finishing with tivo and Jaywalkers. I really should try again with the hat too. I’m thinking that with the right size needles maybe the hat will go better. God I hope so otherwise that lovely alpaca is turning into a felted bag. Even then who the hell would I give it to. My mom is over her blue period. There isn’t enough to make a man bag so that’s the plan, finishing, experimenting and socks.

Has the candidate successfully knitted a sweater?

…CHECK.

Ok Technically I have not actually woven in all the ends yet but it is done and I could wear it as is. I actually finished on sunday so…I am going to do it in a zen like state when I get caught up on my tivo this weekend. It actually fits fairly nicely and I won’t be ashamed to wear it outside and in public. Once I take a shower today and slap on some paste makeup I’ll post a picture of it on me but until then Behold the glory of the sweater!

sweater

Yarn: K1C2 Wick in Avocado 10-11 balls (approx 1200-1320 yrds) bought at yarnmarket.com I liked the yarn a lot. The only thing I noticed was it was easily snagged do the the cable construction of the weird fiber. However its soft and has a nice spring to it. I’d use it again.

Needles: Denise size 7′s

Pattern: I used knit and tonics essential stripe pattern. As you can see mine lacks stripes;) I did make some modifications based on the fact that my row gauge was wildly off. I also knit rather tightly so…no real shocker I used that much yarn. Anyway the modifications included readjusting the math on the v neck to account for my gauge. I also made it much deeper to show off the sisters;) I quite liked the pattern, if I were to knit it again I think I’d add some more shaping to the waist and possibly some short rows for the girls but it looks pretty good as is and it is my first sweater so I’m pleased.

Project Hell

Posted by – April 15, 2006

So I finished my socks. They are sock shaped and although they have some mistakes I am generally pleased with them. First attempt and all. That being said I do not like the yarn I used. I mean I do like the yarn just not for socks. They stretch out really quickly. I should have a photo up sometime later today. I’m having the husband model them for me;) I got him to model it somewhat faster than I thought so… here they are.

socks 002.jpg

So I sort of delayed finishing the socks because I originally had planned on making a scarf thing for the husband to take back to the sandbox with him. I was going to do it out of wick since it gets so freaking hot over there I thought *maybe* it would be useful. Anyway change of plans due to a change in his assignment thus I had 840 yrds of wick. I know I know that much yarn for a scarf? But I’d rather over buy than under buy. Anyway I spent several days searching for a pattern. Picovali would have worked yardage wise but I could not get gauge. Yes I am aware I could have altered the pattern. This is my first sweater so I wasn’t quite ready to do more than take the plunge into sweaters by just following a damn pattern. I also wanted it to be something I might actually wear. I know how picky can I get? So anyway…and much swatching and searching I ended up buying essential stripe by wendy of knitandtonic fame. But seriously I felt like I was in pattern hell.  I also lucked out and was able to order more wick in the right dyelot. Anyway I had a brain fart about part of the pattern but she helped me and I am everlastingly grateful. You know most sweaters are really freaking ugly. I’m busty and I have shoulders a line backer would be proud of. Put me in most boxy sweaters and yuck-o-rama. I mean I may not be skinny and hell even when I am skinny for me I still don’t look skinny so finding something that might not be too hideous was a bit of a challenge. Hopefully this will go well I haven’t gotten that far but let me say I love wick. I love wick. I also got some lion and lamb for the clap. I know I’m about 2 yrs overdue but…Its ok. Honestly I liked the colorway better on my monitor. I might try and pawn it off on someone else. We’ll have to see and just cause… A wip shot. I also was scarily OCD and put all my yarn into an excel spread sheet. That was sort of depressing I have a whole of lot of small bits. Need more yarn for larger projects!

That crazy lace is finished. I so rock:)

Posted by – March 27, 2006

So I finally finished branching out. Not that too many people other than me read this but in the interest of reminding myself of this should I ever get crazy enough choose to do the pattern again, here are my thoughts:
  1. Choose an easily tinked yarn. I made a bad yarn choice and paid for it. Its lovely now but it was a bit sticky with the alpaca. I’d go for something with silk.
  2. Lifelines are your best friend use them often.
  3. If like me, you are a ridiculously tight knitter use an interchangeable set to make those k3tog’s easier.
  4. It is not tv knitting. It can be music knitting but it went fastest when I was just knitting with no distractions. I did not try an audio book.
  5. get a whole hell of alot of blocking pins.
  6. Print out the pattern and just the pattern in a large font with lots of space between the rows so you can easily see where you are and what you are doing.

Obviously this is before I blocked it.
scarff 002.jpg

Just as obviously this is after I blocked it.

Anyway…I had some extra money this past week so I got the yarn for that scarf style thing. Hot damn I love touch me but gah is it the worlds most over priced yarn. I also got wick for a scarf for the husband. So I will continue to work on my socks and I will be working on a scarf for the husband. I’m sort of tempted to just do garter stitch since its fast and simple and really its not so much a fashion thing as a utilitarian thing. Plus its tv knitting;) But I’ll have to take a good long look at my stitch dictionaries first. Well I’d best get back to spring cleaning.

Branching away from the freaking bag thing

Posted by – March 9, 2006

So I did what 3 bags in a month. I have pics of the new one which I’ll post below but I am freaking sick of that pattern. It is fanfuckingtastic tv knitting though so I do find it kind of tempting…I know I know there are other patterns out there. I did find one that calls for a single skein of Cascade 220 maybe I’ll make that my default gift pattern instead. Once I test knit it. I have some red c220 languishing in the stash and I’ll bet my gran would love it. Sounds like a plan to me. If I can remember where I saw the pattern! (Oh what a total relief I found the pattern) Anyway I ended up liking my last bag ALMOST better than the one I made for myself. How funny is that. I wasn’t even that thrilled with that colorway when I bought it. Yet again noro has my grudging love. I guess I had better post a pic so you too can share in the noro love.

bag.jpg
I finished the heel of my first sock. Well ok I cheated the pattern called for 6″ and I did 4″ I might do another inch to split the difference. I also want to get a move one for the other sock since I know I’ll have 2nd sock syndrome when its done. I’m not loving socks. Maybe and I hate to admit this its using the denises instead of the addi’s I admit its a possibility. Or maybe its the fact I’m making it out of Cotton classic but its not like the bestest mostest fun evah or anything. Its ok and I can see the appeal of them mostly nice gifts and portability but… I should reserve judgment until I finish cause 2×2 rib in the round isn’t that much fun no matter what!
wips 002.jpg (yes I realize that is not 4″ I didn’t feel like breaking out the camera)

I haven’t made any really majorly cool yarn purchases. I did manage to free an alice starmore book for the cover price though. I felt like I’d just had sex well what I remember sex feeling like;) It’s the fair isle one. I’m not sure I’m actually going to keep it. I just don’t like the look of FI all that much but I keep thinking I’d be a L’idiot to not hold on it to it.  But the yarn that 100-160 could buy…So we shall see. I also got a nice skacel spring pattern book that had 3 patterns I wouldn’t mind owning. Branching out continues in a half assed fashion. I know if I just dedicated say one repeat a day to it. Maybe two I’d finish in no time but I just… I actually really enjoy knitting it. It’s not that but I KIP so frequently these days. (3 days a week most weeks) That finding the time when I can dedicate my concentration for it is a bit limited. I shouldn’t have these problems I am a bon bon eating hausfrau after all. Not only that I am a bon bon eating hausfrau who has a deployed husband. Alas my inner pilgrim screams at me if I spend my day on my oh so frivolous hobby. This is one instance where my mad multitasking skils fail me. Oh well it will be finished some day.  If I ever make it again I must remember an easily tinked yarn is best! Might as well show off the progress or lack thereof. I will say tho I do think its coming out nicely just a bit slowly!

Two Fo's in a week

Posted by – February 19, 2006

When I last wrote (which was way too long ago) I had just started branching out. As I have mentioned it is not tv knitting so progress has been slow. I’ve also been distracted by a need for tv knitting due to house guests and adopting a puppy that requires special watching lest she destroy my house even more. But in that time I finished another bag and a scarf (for me even) I must be getting faster since I switched to continental since I have made this scarf before and I know it took me much longer than 3 days. I might keep this one it depends on how short it looks once its done blocking. If its too short I’m going to send it to my step mom. She’s short much like my mom so it will be less notice I hope. I am going to attempt to knock out branching out by weds since that is my next snb night. I also have to start the booga bag for missy. I do love making them since they are such a quick knit. I ended up getting more Noro for hers since the stripes are fun. I had been pretty good about my fiber addiction until I took my mom to nashville. Just a skein here and there for her bag but then as I said we went to Nashville. I ended up getting some noro for her bag, 3 hanks of manos for my so called scarf but I’m not 100% sure of the colorway it was more the best they had then my ideal. Oh well I’m sure I could make it as a gift if I don’t love it. I also got some angora on sale for a boring sweater for me but it was more than ten dollars off a ball and 4 balls of k1c2 paintbox for umm a bag I guess? Anyway now there are two local nights to go knit. Claire and I still want to do a night that’s not centered on a store. Since not everyone shops at lys and it would be kickass if we found other younger people. Not that the women we knit with now are awful I quite like most of them but you know…I think we both want to meet people closer to our age. Anyway more photo torture! As soon as it finishes blocking I’ll get a photo of my new scarf.
