Finished Lady Eleanor

Posted by – June 28, 2007

Lady Eleanor, started January 28th, 2007, finished June 27th, 2007
Pattern: Lady Eleanor from Scarf Style
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden Colorway 82
Needles: Kp Options Size 7′s
Dimensions: 19″ x 71″ excluding Fringe
Pattern Notes: Super easy Pattern. I did change the fringe because I thought the other would get ratty looking and my cats might kill it. It was fun but I did call it the black hole of entrelac because it seemed to take forever. I would suggest making sure you get gauge since I didn’t and ended up with over 70 tiers instead of the 37 in the pattern.
Would I knit it again? Yes assuming I got gauge.

Swatching and sweaters and of course socks.

So there I was happily knitting away on the Charade socks, when Sarkasmo tells me hers are coming out too wide. I don’t think much of it at the time because well of course *my* socks were going to be perfect I have the all the vigor of pent up sock knitting to carry me through these little unfortunate occurrences. Then I start the stitch pattern, after about two repeats it is looking a rather a touch…nah it can’t be too wide. After all I did my toe hat and I’ve made socks of this size before and they are my favorite socks that I haven’t given away. So I do another repeat. Now its definitely looking too wide. It’s feeling too wide too. So I get out other pairs to compare it to, yep its too wide. I check my gauge and I’m getting about 8.25 spi. I measure my foot again and yep WAY too wide. So I had been planning to frog back to before the stitch patter and go from there but at this point I just frogged the entire sock. I have some ideas for starting it over but at this point I’m rather disgusted so I think I’ll switch yarns and patterns. If anyone has any ideas from my sock stash please let me know… The other knitting of yesterday was swatching for thermal. Now in a case of lightening did strike twice, I got gauge with the recommended needles even. There must be some kind of cosmic connection between me and Cosmicpluto’s Designs. I’m only a quarter joking because I like every one of her designs and I’ve swatched for two of them now and both times I’ve gotten gauge.I’m not using gloss because even though it is very affordable I found rowan’s cashsoft 4ply in loganberry for a steal at the knit happens sale.

Rowan Cashsoft 4 Ply Loganberry

I just hope I have enough. I am going to be making it very fitted since negative ease is so much more flattering. I was very much impressed by the version over at knitting escapism. Although I did achieve gauge I might try it on slightly smaller  needles just to see. If I am very lucky I will get just a slightly firmer fabric without it being too off. The question now is size. I think I will also omit the buttons and make damn sure the arms are fitted since I don’t care for overly floppy sleeves.  Also in a burst of OMFG I AM DONE WITH THE BLACK HOLE. I am finally going to cast on for that zipper cardi from blue sky. Granted I didn’t get gauge but I can redo the math and its very cute. Plus…in the round sweater is not a traveling knit. So that will be 3 yes three wips! I must be crazy. I know some of you people have 30+, I just don’t see how you can stand the stress.

A Knitting Heretic Part 1: In a subculture that has spats over the one true way to knit socks is it even possible for there to be knitting heresy?

Posted by – June 26, 2007

First I just want to state that this is my opinion only, if you chose to take it personally that I don’t like XYZ and I am clearly OPRESSING your creativity then that is so not my problem.

A while ago I was reading about knitting heresies on LJ and knitters review, some of them were quite funny. However behind the humor was something rather disturbing. The very fact that there was considered an unspoken orthodoxy in knitting and that so very many women (yes although I am quite aware that men knit I would guess over 95% of knitters are still lacking the phallus of might) felt compelled to adhere to whatever they felt were the One True Path To Being A Real Knitter. Besides for some reason I think a man that knits is already breaking not new but weed infested overgrown ground. However it goes deeper than that because there appears to even be different sects in the knitting religion. So in the interest of declaring any bias I might hold to certain knitter types let me get my heresies stated. Further sections will highlight different knitter types and their version of the One True Path To Being a Real Knitter.

v Warmers are dumb.

Ø Wrist Warmers: Perhaps the most ridiculous things ever. Unless you are a tennis player or have some sort of RSI and even then I doubt a hand knit will do as much good as something your Orthopedist would suggest.

Ø Arm Warmers: The same people who make these complain about sleeves on a sweater. If you hate making them for a sweater why make them as a project? Also why not in fact just put on a damn cardigan.

Ø Leg Warmers: Dancers of course have a reason for wearing them. All others please let 80’s fashion mistakes die.

v Stash: No matter the size is Neutral.

Ø The people that stash (of which I am one): Some people stash for a rainy day. Some, like me, stash when they find spazzo sales so they can afford to use better yarn. Unless it looks like one of those hoarder people live in your home or you have have spent every cent on stash and can no longer pay your rent. Just accept that you buy yarn because you like yarn. It’s your home and your money, you are more than allowed to do with it as you like. If you feel guilt because you could have donated it to whatever is the trendy cause of the month look at it as your personal jobs creation program. Without yarn buying there will be less yarn choices and less yarn shops.

Ø The people that do not stash for whatever reason: Not stashing does not in fact make you a better person. It’s a choice. I do in fact somewhat admire the freedom non-stashers have. When they want to do a project they can just pick their yarn and go get it. Since I have a stash I feel compelled to at least try and find a substitute in my stash first

v Yarn Snobbery

Ø No one should feel better because they use Mcsnotty’s Yarns and no one should feel bad because they use the mart of wally yarns. Each has its place and project.

Ø Knit picks is not always the cheapest option for a natural fiber per yard. Now before someone issues a knitting edict against me for my heresy, let me state that I love my Knit picks needles. I also like the fact that knitpicks has made knitting with natural fiber more affordable. They also are providing some of the competition which is making big box store yarn suck less (see the redesign of Lion brands yarn line or patons sws for an example).

Ø Personally I am a yarn snob. However except for sock and my drawers of one of two balls of random yarn most of it I bought for 40% or more off.

Ø It’s hilarious to see yarn snobs go gaga for blends like cashmerino or any of its clones. I am one of those snobs since I love Cashsoft.

v LYS

Ø Owners: Quit whining about how online shops take away your biz and find a reason for people to come to your shop. Community sells. Yes I am aware it costs more to run a brick and mortar store but the markup on top of the MSRP is a bit much. I usually manage to find something to get when I go in but I buy for big projects online usually because not only is it cheaper but I can get what I want. I can count on one hand the times I’ve been to a shop that had the yarn I wanted in an amount that was suitable for a large project. And usually no I’m not willing to special order it and pay more when I can have it within a week and at a better price. Also friendly helpful staff would go a long way towards convincing me to shop with you. Also get some decent freaking light. It is absolutely crazy that I need to take yarn outside your shop to be able to see what it looks like. Bring in more local or indie dyers. Us sock addicts well we have small problems with sock yarn addiction.

v Washing Handknits: There is more than one way to skin a… well you get the drift.

It's Done! And of course Socks

Well its finished. I still have some minor finishing to do so no FO post till later in the week. However I did start the Charade socks in Dream In Colors old sock yarn Gaia. I think the colorway is in vino veritas or it could be a very dark wisterious. I think its lovely either way.

Right now its at the toe hat stage.

Just the usual daily ramble.

So yesterday sucked on the knitting front but overall was quite fun. Got my STR shipment for the month. Chatted with all three of the family members I talk to a lot. Justin only had to work half a day. These are all very good things. He’s off carrying heavy things and playing army. Best of all as of tomorrow I am free of ANY FRG responsibility. My gran got on my case about that but I did my time and we’re getting out in November, unless the two most dreaded words in the military lexicon occur. Its a good time for a break. I have new adventures to plan. I have even had a productive morning thus far. I woke up and got Justin off to work, blogged on the knit blog, uploaded to flickr, and weeded. The front beds are terrible and I need to pick up some garden bags this week so I can get that bagged up. I want it to dry out a bit first in the blazing sun that we are sure to have today anyway, so its not a loss. Though my goal was to make it look less nasty and I think I made it worse with the waste sitting there by the walk. Oh well, I also have to clean the house and what not. I’m supposed to go out with Claire today but who knows if that happy outing will occur. We shall see.  Anyway even if it doesn’t I’ll be up for the week since I’ll have the cleaning and what not done.  Our new mower arrived and while the yard could use it I’ll have to convince Justin to put it together for me before I can get off my happy ass and mow. I’ll remind him today since it would be nice to have that task over with. The yard guy is out of town till next week and I’d just as soon not give him another check. Well I am conflicted because while I would love to just have him for the rest of the summer its a huge waste of money. I have been looking at homes since I have a basic idea of what sort of Mortgage we can get. Its doable. Depends on a lot of factors but we won’t be in a murder shack at least.  In closing I will leave you with a super cute picture of pandora guarding the knitting.

The best laid plans…often end up getting screwed up.

So I had all these grand knitting plans for the day. I really really did. Now granted I got sucked into chatting online for probably a bit too much of the day.  Anyway after I posted and did the crap I always have to do. I sat down and was blissfully listening to Amelia solve her latest crime.  After a while I realized I was STARVING so I go chop up the salad for the day and sit down to eat and discover a mini tragedy. I can no longer eat ranch. Though perhaps it was the egg I put in the salad. Well anyway after that slightly disappointing lunch, I again sit down to knit. I’m just getting back into the groove when Justin calls me to tell me he’s done for the day.  So I hang out with him for a bit and proceed to start trying to knit again. Then my mom calls. Then I decide its time for hydrotherapy so I take a bath. Anyway short of giving the whole laundry list of excuses which I won’t inflict on you all since I like you too much.Well umm yeah. But you know sometime today or tomorrow considering I have tentative plans today I will be done and much rejoicing shall be had. It is a sign of course that I must finish soon since my STR kit showed up yesterday. I haven’t photographed it yet and really I’m sure you’ve all already seen it somewhere by now. In the comments, I was reminded by kristen not to forget my plans for thermal. I have not! Hell I even have yarn for that one:) I have about three options for thermal. I can dye up some Henry’s attic kona or Louet Pearl. Or I can use the RYC cashsoft I got for the pattern. I’m leaning towards the cashsoft since why use some of my hoarded undyed sock yarn.  So last night after dinner pandora decided she had to guard the knitting and thus I found this.

She sure loves to model;) The black one behind her is her sometimes adversary Enki. Would you believe he used to be (and in his head still is)  a very fierce kitty who made her cower before him when he was less than a quarter of her size?

The black hole is shrinking!

So ten days ago I had 18″ to go or so I thought. I have been knitting. Now I have not been doing nothing else but knitting. Hell even on my Olympic knitting days I didn’t quite manage that feat. So last week I thought I was going to have a sort of mini vacation with husband gone. Monday he goes in to work and calls me and tells me that uhh things have changed he is not going out to the field for 4 days. I was glad but oddly sort of disappointed since I know I could have finished it with just a few days to myself. Anyway overall it was good and later on in the week I did get one day to myself. I also got a lot of knitting done that day! Anyway right now its at 67″ thats unblocked but slightly stretched. I don’t plan on blocking it flat. That is so totally finishable today. So I am making the executive decision to clean up the house and then do nothing but knit on the sucker. oh my god you have no idea how gleeful I am.  By tonight I will be blocking and planning out DIFFERENT PROJECTS. Socks and umm something and maybe even some lace. Of course in reality I will end up with socks and maybe the cardi mod of wicked if I can pick a yarn. The problem is that ever since I saw the cardi mod I have wanted that sweater in that sort of yarn even. All I have stashed though is very much commercial yarn. So do I overdye it myself to achieve some thing like that and risk ruining a sweaters worth of yarn? Though I suppose I can always dye it black if thats the case. Oh decisions decisions! And socks, how the hell can I pick from all my beautimious new sock yarn let alone what I have stashed.  So I had best get knitting so all these glorious things come to pass…

Crackpot theories are the most fun.

So yet again I woke up at the ass crack of early. The domestic stuff with which my life is mostly concerned is rather boring to blog hence the shortage of posts. However I am quite sure I mentioned that I post much more frequently to my knit blog. Hell I don’t even have interesting cooking to blog since I am dieting. A chance comment by an online acquaintance led to me delve back into the fascinating world of paleoanthropology. I had forgotten how much I enjoy reading about the latest discoveries. It’s all so very fascinating. I still favor Multiregional Continuity vesus the out of Africa school. I also still find the aquatic ape theory interesting even if it is derided currently. Perhaps I just enjoy crackpot theories even if they are wrong? I certainly do enjoy my crackpot nephilim theories. Although I did read something *very* interesting two days ago about the Egyptians. They apparently thought of the land of punt as their ancestral homeland. Now this could have been somewhere down in east Africa, but they also called it ‘god’s land’ which was also a nickname for Lebanon. I found this vastly more interesting when I was under the misapprehension that Lebanon was considered as the origin of punt for obvious reasons but its still a slightly provocative piece of information. My renewed interest in egypt stems from reading the amelia peabody series. I am racing through them via audio book as fast as I can. HWKDD and I also have been playing Arkham Horror. Its a fantastic game, Lovecraft based and its coop. We much prefer playing coop when possible. Things are much the same as they were in that quarter when I last posted. The only thing different is I’m hosting new photos on flickr. I had to get a pro account for a knit community thing I wanted to do and I am really impressed. I did have an unfortunate mishap with the hair dyeing this weekend.

DOH! It did not look that red in the store nor was it supposed to be more than one color like that.

18 inches to go

So in my calculations I neglected to think about my darling, my angelcakes, my gamerboy husband. Friday he comes walking in at noon and announces he’s done for the day. I was like uhhh whaaaa? He also informs me that he will be away Monday-Thursday. So I spend a little time hanging out with him and go back to my knitting. However he’s been playing with a new toy that has rendering time so he keeps coming in the living room and distracting me. Saturday I kept getting phone calls and I didn’t sit down with the knitting until well after noon. Then I had to make dinner and we watched a movie. I know I know people do watch movies and knit but I was too into the film. But I have finished 52″ that is significant. Also in light of my time in the coming week I am extending my deadline.

The black hole of entrelac

Posted by – June 7, 2007

So I haven’t blogged much about it but I’ve been working on Lady E for quite some time. It’s been that red-headed stepchild of a wip I consider working on and then go nahhhh… I think I’ll start a new pair of socks. At first you know I was oh so excited by the project and I was my usual ocd pain in the ass self. Obsessing over swatching and which needle size to go with etc. I’m not sure I was correct in picking 7′s but I thought the other fabrics were too hole-y. So then I started it and slowly but surely became rapidly sort of bored with it. Oh I liked it well enough, it wasn’t painful to knit, but it seemed so freaking slow. I kept promising myself that if I did 2 rows of squares a week it would get done in time for when I can wear it and there would be no stress. Every weekend I said that and then I just continued to knit on my socks or wicked or whatever else I was working on. However in the interest of my sanity I decided I had to finish it. So I decided I was only allowed to work on fixing my socks that need new heels and Lady E and while it feels like a black hole I know its grown a bit. So I decided that I should have my own knitting olympics style event, Finish lady E by the end of the weekend. I’ve got the next two amelia peabody books purchased at audible. I have nothing pressing other than the minimum of hausfrauerie so I am going to attempt this feat. It’s Thursday surely I can do it.  Currently I have 40″-41″, it has to be 70″ according to the pattern. That’s only 7.5″ a day I can do that as long as nothing gets in my way!  The gold medal will be to finish the knitting, edging and the fringe. The silver medal will be just to finish the knitting. Bronze will be to come within 5″ of finishing. The prizes are yet to be determined. I’m thinking a blocking board for gold, blocking wires for silver and a skein of sock yarn for bronze. In light of this I should hurry up and go knit!
