Not a heck of a lot done on my knitting this week. I even skipped SNB since I was so tired. I’ve been hard at work getting my yarn site up, its mostly done. I’m not sure I love the design. I’ll have to take a fresh look in the morning. I absolutely refused to work on it this weekend. So yesterday I went on a yarn crawl with Claire, Judie and Phil. Obviously I’m not joining in the no yarn for a year thing. Although since it was more yarn for an existing project and sock yarn…it would still fall in the rules. I just am not one to limit myself and this was birthday money. Anyway we went to Haus of Yarn, Angel Hair Yarns and the Knaughty Knitter. At Haus I scored some more silk garden since I had this fear of running out for Lady E and at Knaughty I got some sock yarn. I also had found some buttons but promptly forgot about them when checking out. Angel hair I almost picked up a couple of things but…didn’t for whatever reason. Pictures probably tomorrow since the light now is sucky. We had a really good time and a fabulous lunch. So after we got back I officially started Lady E. Its coming along really nicely and entrelac is *easy*. See above on the whole sucky picture thing. I also almost got to the heel of sock two. I’m going to work my arse off so I can try and get it out the door tomorrow or Tuesday. I want my gran to have them since she isn’t feeling so well. Today I *finally* got some time to dye. I did 4 hanks. I also reorganized the kitchen a bit to make it easier to find time which should be very helpful. Before I do *any* more dying I need to reskein the yarn I got last month. Maybe I’ll throw in a movie or two and do it tonight if I get sick of sock/lady E/sweater and need a break. I did a teal, green and silver one which admittedly was a re-dye but it looks pretty neat. I also overdyed a skein with some purple since I wasn’t thrilled with how it came out last time. Then I did a valentines day color all in different pinks. Then since I’m reading a book that takes place in Miami I did a silver, teal and pink skein. I’m from Miami originally so it was fitting. Anyway…No pictures so I’ll wait till tomorrow to blog more.
Month: January 2007
Things on the net that just drive me batshit crazy…
There are certain things I run across far too often online. I’m crabby since I woke up on the ass crack of early for no good reason so I figured I’d list them. And by ass crack I mean several hours before my husband had to go to work early, He goes in at 5 am. If you do these things and I hurt your feelers well I am sorry but this is my list of twitch inducing make me want to haul off and bitch slap you pet peeves. Maybe its because even though I can be as snobby and elitist as the rest of the world part of me always wants to say “oh come off it” or barring that “get your head out of your ass”. I blame my salty tongue on my mother;)
1. Gifted as a verb. Yes I am aware that it is technically correct, in fact I just checked dictionary.com, however I still think it sounds ridiculously pretentious. What is wrong with verbs like given or gave?
2. The Phrase “dear friend” aren’t all friends dear? If they aren’t perhaps you should be using the word acquaintance.
3. Begging for money. I’ve seen far far too many people essentially beg for money for X over the internet. One girl I ran across on LJ was begging for cash for a down payment on an apartment. Now I realize people run into problems, hell I’ve been so broke we ate the pantry bare. Like even the stuff that never gets eaten but it just bugs me. What I find even more incomprehensible are that people fall for it. I have zero problem donating to charity. I often do donate myself but there is a vast difference between a charity and a charity of one.
4. Snark Communities. Ok on the one hand I do enjoy sites such as you knit what. On the other hand snarking does not in fact mean you are better than the person being snarked.
What a Yarny Day
So today was sort of cool. We went to the place where yarn goes to retire and I picked up some worsted weight wool for socks for my dad. Not to say he isn’t worth sock yarn but…I like how fast thick house socks knit up. Also I know my dad and these will last a billion times longer. I also got another skein of the one manly solid sock yarn I have cause I was worried I’d run out. Oh and I picked up a skein of silk garden to play with for Lady E since ummm I am cutting it close on yarn. I have 12 balls but I am a tight knitter and this way I will have *hopefully* enough. Of course I was reading the craftster KAL for it and I got remorse over not picking SWS or rowan tapestry. I’ll have to pick up some of that and make two more obviously since well why the heck not. So I swatched with the oddball SG more for hand than gauge cause I’m way more interested in that and I soaked it. We’ll see how much it blooms. I’m thinking a 7 or 8 at this point though. I then attempted the garterlac dishcloth. Now its a great pattern but I tried to do it in cottontots. Ugh I hate that yarn. It’s fine once its knit up or only in simple stitch work but it was so awful I threw out the rest of the ball. I worked a very little bit on the broadripple sock. I expect to finish or be damn close to it by tomorrow. No pictures cause I’m too lazy and embarrassed by my lack progress.
Ack it has been a while…I had a birthday and I was busy with Stuff. I did get the etsy shop going though so go buy my yarn;) I haven’t gotten that much done really. I started my sweater and got stopped by realizing I didn’t have buttons for it and that could lead to disaster since its an unusual shade and well umm… But alas now I will have to start another project. I think I might finally get around to making my odessa and starting Lady E this weekend.I did get a fair amount done on my sock. I am really liking how its turning out even though I would never necessarily choose that colorway for myself.
The only problem is I think I shortrowed a bit too much for the heel it looks so freaking narrow. It does feel great though!
I expect to finish the sock this weekend since I now have the needles to do it magic loop. My birthday was much yarny/knitting goodness and an ipod which will vastly improve my ability to knit and read. On a related note this whole cascade vs knitpicks battle is leaving a very bad taste in my mouth. It makes me sad since I really do like their yarn. But its absolutely disgusting to go after one company after another. The Debbie Bliss thing I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but to follow it up with this? Nah…Anyway I am going to take a much deserved knitting time break. I spent far too long on geek stuff today.
*getting* gifts should not be this stressful
So HWKDD has not been very successful in his gift giving this year. It’s not his fault at all but I’m still missing my Christmas gifts. Apparently what happened is amazon sent the books/etc he ordered me to our old address. Thus it was returned and thus well apparently I’ll see them someday. I know what they are though and they rock. Then we get to my birthday, so he decided I too deserved a real ipod not the creative something or other he retired when he got his Ipod for Christmas. Very swank gift right? Well amazon for some reason is having problems charging his card. No clue why there is a plenty of money in that account. So I haven’t gotten that either. But my brushed metal hard case is on its way! The weird thing is some of the charges went through and some well didn’t so today I get the fantastic fun of calling the bank and saying WTF? Now I’m not sure I need my own Ipod because lets face it how often do I actually leave the house? I go to knitting and I go to run errands and I’m not even that into music anymore. I mean sure I like it but its not like its a hobby like it used to be. But I really really wanted one. I was consumed with the idea of having one to listen to my audio books while I do other things. It would mean I could sit other than at my desk if I wanted to audioread and knit. WAHOO! I mean how the hell can you top that. Also I do have WAY WAY WAY more music on mp3 than I do on cd so maybe that will improve my car music listening. Anyway I am very very excited. I can knit it a cozy! I actually do not feel the need to knit everything so chances are it will live in its case sans cozy. Plus if ever we live in a city with oh I don’t know trains again…Can you tell I’ve been missing Chicago lately? You know I’ve been overall pretty happy since HWKDD and I got together, STL is home in a way no other place ever has been but I would love love love love to be back in Chi. Then again ,and here is where the logic fails, if we moved back to Chi we’d have to move out to the burbs because we have exorcised our 2nd Amendment rights and you can’t have those items in cook county. So do I really want to pay the inflated cost of living to live that far from the city? But we do have good friends there and if the job thing worked out…Anyway on to the more stress…So I discovered Justin’s gift cause he saw me window shopping for one. Then my dad offered to get me one as well. So now I have to come up with another gift from him in that price range. I’m good on home electronics. I promised not to get anymore furniture till after we move. Though I think he might make an exception for a chair. I really really really really want a chair. I also want a new couch, new desks, not ugly filing cabinets, occasional tables, and lamps and.. but I digress. The only thing I can think of is perhaps a spinning wheel but I’m not sure how much I really want that. I mean yes I do want that that since spinning rocks. But do I need it? I’m not even sure of the brand to get. I know I love the really really old fashioned looks of the Kromski’s but I haven’t spun on them and I don’t even like most handspun. So it would be a very expensive destressing device since I’m not sure I’d ever even knit with the yarn I made. The only thing I really wanted for my birthday I bought with the dregs of my Christmas money so…Other than yarn and I’m not sure how well that suggestion would go over I have no idea and this is incredibly stressful to me for some reason.
Last Day
So in keeping with the only acceptable geek 30th birthday last night we watched logans run and had a flashing red cake. I had a good time. Other than that nothing terribly exciting has happened well other than breaking my head on zen cart.
And yet more purple
Project: Garter Rib Socks in Claudia’s Just Plum
Pattern: I’m not sure when a pattern becomes my own since I used Sensational knitted socks and Wendy’s toe up to sort of help me along.
Yarn: Claudia’s Hand Painted Sock in Just Plum
Needles: Knit Picks Options in Sz 1
Notes: These took me far too long. I mean its all my fault. I loved the yarn. I loved the pattern I just got distracted by other things.
But in purple I'm *stunning*
I did start the sock but I’m trying to decide how to proceed since its toe up and the pattern was written cuff down. I’ll probably just go with it and place a life line. Better than having nothing to knit. Anyway so I have two in stash options for lucy since although I have the yarn for 7 sweaters, 2 are cotton and umm no and the rest is in DK weight. Option one is this dark eggplant heather thats a long discontinued yarn that I picked up for a song at the place where yarn goes to retire. I got gauge. Stitch and row no less maybe the universe is trying to tell me something?
It’s pretty and I do like it I’m just concerned the yarn might be sort of hairy and obscure the diamond pattern. I am amazed at how soft it is since I am positive its not merino. The color is very me. My other option is this pretty heather-y lighter purple from classic elite. I’m going to swatch that today and see how it goes.
In the end I decided to go with the first one since I felt the bottom one was a bit too busy…ok now to cast on!
6 days till my palm starts flashing…
My god I can’t believe I will be 30 in six days. Not only is this horrifying, I’m not quite sure how it can be true. Where did the time go? It seems only yesterday that I hadn’t even started dating HWKDD. It just seems so weird. It also seems so old. I don’t want to be old yet.
Wahoo I am *done*
I finished everything I set out to do with my knitting this week. A day early even. Ok I did not dye yet, but tomorrow the husband is off which means it’s still the weekend as far as I am concerned;) Anyway last night I finished the garter rib sock and frog the ill-conceived paintbox bag so I am officially *done* with 2006 knits. I’d show a picture of the socks but they are sitting in some slightly soapy water. However I did manage to take a picture of the socks Judie knit for me out of my hand-dyed. I so love these socks:)
The light today sucks since its grey and rainy. I love days like this but it just makes for piss poor photos. However there is nothing like a day like this, some yarn, some old cure playing. It’s kind of sad how stunted my music tastes are. For the most part I’ve been listening to the exact same bands since I was 13. I blame my adolescent angst. Oh boy was I angsty! It’s weird to me now but then I sure knew how to dwell on such useless crap. So looking into the future I guess I had better pick some new projects. I am thinking three or four depending on what I decide to do. The tentative list is:
- Socks. I already picked the yarn and it’s going to be STR med in the Lagoon Colorway. As to pattern…I am thinking just the basic sock toe up. They go quickly and hopefully I can squeeze two pair out of the skein. One for me and one for grandma. Then again I could pick a more complicated pattern…maybe jaywalkers.
- Sweater. I swatched for lucy and got stitch gauge. I’m just not sure I *love* the fabric. Might swatch down a needle size and see today.
- Something totally mindless for tv knitting and SNB. I might redo the math on the ill-advised paintbox bag. That yarn needs to be felted, too rough for a scarf. Also could do a really simple scarf with that alpaca I dyed before the Christmas.
- Lady E or another clap. I want to do a mini clap with this alpaca I picked up last year.
So getting those ironed out and cast on is the goal for this week. Also must dye and take photos. Not a bad line up for the week.
