Daley wants security cameras at bars

CHICAGO — Surveillance cameras — aimed at government buildings, train platforms and intersections here — might soon be required at corner taverns and swanky nightclubs.

Mayor Richard Daley wants to require bars open until 4 a.m. to install security cameras that can identify people entering and leaving the building. Other businesses open longer than 12 hours a day, including convenience stores, eventually would have to do the same.

Daley’s proposed city ordinance adds a dimension to security measures installed after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The proliferation of security cameras — especially if the government requires them in private businesses — troubles some civil liberties advocates.

“There is no reason to mandate all of those cameras unless you one day see them being linked up to the city’s 911 system,” says Ed Yohnka of the Illinois American Civil Liberties Union. “We have perhaps reached that moment of critical mass when people … want to have a dialogue about how much of this is appropriate.”

Milwaukee is considering requiring cameras at stores that have called police three or more times in a year. The Baltimore County Council in Maryland ordered large malls to put cameras in parking areas after a murder in one garage last year. The measure passed despite objections from business groups.

“We require shopping centers to put railings on stairs and install sprinkler systems for public safety. This is a proper next step,” says Baltimore County Councilman Kevin Kamenetz, who sponsored the ordinance.

Some cities aren’t going along. Schenectady, N.Y., shelved a proposal that would have required cameras in convenience stores.

“The safer we make the city, the better it is for everyone,” says Chicago Alderman Ray Suarez, who first proposed mandatory cameras in some businesses. “If you’re not doing anything wrong, what do you have to worry about?”

Nick Novich, owner of three Chicago bars, worries about the cost. “Every added expense … puts a small business in greater jeopardy of going out of business,” he says. Daley says cameras will deter crime, but Novich says, “That’s what we’re paying taxes for.”

Colleen McShane, president of the Illinois Restaurant Association, says the proposal, which Daley announced last week, is an unfair burden on small businesses. “This is once again more government intrusion,” she says.

Some business owners say cameras make patrons feel safer. Cameras are in all 30 Chicago bars, clubs and restaurants owned by Ala Carte Entertainment, spokeswoman Julia Shell says: “It’s far more cost-effective for us to have them than not to have them.”

By spring, 30 Chicago intersections will have cameras to catch drivers who run red lights. More than 2,000 cameras around the city are linked to an emergency command center, paid for in part by federal homeland security funds.

The newest “smart” cameras alert police when there’s gunfire or when someone leaves a package or lingers outside public buildings. The system is based on the one in London that helped capture suspected terrorists after last summer’s subway bombings.

Chicago is installing those sophisticated camera systems more aggressively than any other U.S. city, says Rajiv Shah, an assistant professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago who studies the policy implications of surveillance technology. Recording what people do in public “is just getting easier and cheaper to do,” he says. “Think of your camera cellphone.”

When I last wrote (which was way too long ago) I had just started branching out. As I have mentioned it is not tv knitting so progress has been slow. I’ve also been distracted by a need for tv knitting due to house guests and adopting a puppy that requires special watching lest she destroy my house even more. But in that time I finished another bag and a scarf (for me even) I must be getting faster since I switched to continental since I have made this scarf before and I know it took me much longer than 3 days. I might keep this one it depends on how short it looks once its done blocking. If its too short I’m going to send it to my step mom. She’s short much like my mom so it will be less notice I hope. I am going to attempt to knock out branching out by weds since that is my next snb night. I also have to start the booga bag for missy. I do love making them since they are such a quick knit. I ended up getting more Noro for hers since the stripes are fun. I had been pretty good about my fiber addiction until I took my mom to nashville. Just a skein here and there for her bag but then as I said we went to Nashville. I ended up getting some noro for her bag, 3 hanks of manos for my so called scarf but I’m not 100% sure of the colorway it was more the best they had then my ideal. Oh well I’m sure I could make it as a gift if I don’t love it. I also got some angora on sale for a boring sweater for me but it was more than ten dollars off a ball and 4 balls of k1c2 paintbox for umm a bag I guess? Anyway now there are two local nights to go knit. Claire and I still want to do a night that’s not centered on a store. Since not everyone shops at lys and it would be kickass if we found other younger people. Not that the women we knit with now are awful I quite like most of them but you know…I think we both want to meet people closer to our age. Anyway more photo torture! As soon as it finishes blocking I’ll get a photo of my new scarf.

So I know I know its been quite some time. But I have a totally valid excuse! I do I swear. However if you don’t already know I’m not going to enlighten you. Privacy and safety concerns.. Anyway…took a long time to deal with the fall out from the incident. In fact the final dealing with things associated with the incident happens tomorrow. Then my mom came to visit and I was busy with Don’s store and well…Anyway… sure there is a lot to report on but since I refuse to post that errr let us look at pictures! Sometimes I am envious of those people with more externally focused blogs but I think if I had a political blog I’d surely give myself a heart attack. However right now except for missing Justin more than I can express I feel pretty good. I have Steve coming over tomorrow and I’ve got sonic youth playing in the background and I finished 2 projects from start to finish in a week (knitting I know I promised but…its such a huge part of my life…) Anyway on to my utter lack of photographic skill. Remember I was planning on some homemade goodness for valentines day for Justin well I forgot to grab some shots of the cookies since they didn’t quite look as swank as I was hoping. Then again neither do these but what the hell…

I thought when I bought the kit that it was hard candy and instead it was some sort of white chocolate type stuff so I hope it doesn’t melt. Below was the most recent addition to the family. However its not going to work. My cats hate her. To the point one of them is so pissed (pun intended) at me that he has ceased using the litter box.

Finally I got some really cute pictures of Enki and Morgan cuddling together, a total first.

ONCE AGAIN A DEAFENING SILENCE FROM AMERICA’S SO-CALLED “FEMINISTS”

They pretend to be concerned about the welfare of women but are in fact just Leftists who use fake-concern about women to promote hatred of ordinary people and their way of life. They really care not at all about women. If they did they would be hitting the streets over the story below:

Nazanin, 17, was sentenced to death by hanging for defending herself against three rapists. A young girl who defended herself and her chastity against three male assailants who intended to kidnap and rape her causing injury to one of them who later died in hospital was condemned to death by hanging in an Islamic court in Iran. Nazanin who has seen no more than 17 Springs, all of which under the tyrannical rule of the Mullahs is now facing execution for trying to defend herself and her honor.

Nowhere in the world and under no law self defense is considered to be a crime, but in the tyrannical mullacracy of Iran if a woman does not resist rape she will be stoned as adulterer and if she does she will be hanged.

Nazanin, this young innocent girl, was assaulted by three criminal men in the West of Tehran while strolling with her niece in a park last March (2005). To defend herself she pulled out a knife and stabbed one of her assailants. The knife penetrated the ribs of her attacker who later died in the hospital. The attacks on women in Iran is so frequent that many are forced to carry a concealed weapon for self defense. Unfortunately the Islamic law does not even allow women that right.

Despite the fact that she had been acting in self defense, as shown by the evidences presented and the testimony of eyewitnesses, Nazanin was sentenced to death by hanging. In the last court hearing she repeatedly said I only defended myself and the honor of my family. Her words fell of deaf ears and the all male jury who like their misogynist prophet thought it is outrageous for a woman to stand for her rights and defend her dignity and honor, swiftly ordered her execution. The travesty of justice in Islamic Republic of Iran is beyond description

I finally got off my ass and took some pics of what I’ve done to the place in recent weeks. I had a fairly productive week but I’ve been grouchy and irritable and sort of snapping at people. I don’t know why I get moody sometimes but its one of my weeks. Probably PMS or something hormonal. My idiot tolerance is at an all time low. Every question I want to answer with “your question + google = my bliss” I think its because husband has been fairly absent so that tends to affect my mood rather dramatically. I decided last week Thursdays are my day for me since its my almost weekly knitting group might as well take the whole day and do stuff I like. Today it didn’t quite work out that way. I had a meeting at 10 and then I had to kill an hour and then I showed up at the group. I really like the group, I have no idea why I like so many older ladies I just do. One tho was a twit but c’est la vie. Anyway… as I said its been productive I built an island, did the taxes, worked on my friends store which I still need to finish. I guess and of course cue the irony here since the prevailing notion is I sit around and eat bon bons that I in some ways don’t have enough time to really enjoy any of it. My plan was to come home after knitting and work on the crafty, homemade valentines stuff for husband I am making. Maybe I’m being a whiny brat but the ink pads I got for the card were all dried up (go dollar tree!) So while I was disgruntled I moved on to the lollipop making. It was fun and I can totally see doing something similar again though I was dismayed to learn I hadn’t read carefully enough and the resulting candies were more chocolate like than hard candy. So I’m not sure its something I should mail off to the sandbox. They came out pretty cute so I think I’ll probably try. Its not like I’ll eat them otherwise. I’m not a huge sweets eater. I mean I know I’m not skinny but its not because I bake. I have candy from last Christmas I still haven’t finished. At any rate…oh yeah..so I made the candy and then rushed right along to find a recipe for sugar cookies and icing at which point I discovered that the printer ink I had purchased some time ago well for some reason something is wrong with it and it makes my printer think the other ink cartridge isn’t right for the machine. I can’t even remember if I got it at the PX or at walmart. I’ll try returning it to walmart though for a new one. I am stating publicly (thats a laugh since no but me probably reads this) that as soon as I finish this site I’m working on I am quitting smoking. I was really crabby at this point my laid back sunny disposition had had enough so I went to bed.Now of course its 1 am and I am wide awake. I think I might be sick or working on it. Tired Check, Cold like I’ve got a fever Check, slightly nauseous check. There has been a bug running around so it wouldn’t be terribly shocking. And now on to the pictures…

My new Island

I need a top for it but considering most islands are 3-500 dollars I quite like my 30 dollar DIY version.
